🌧️ Bengaluru Heavy Rainfall Disrupts Daily Life: Roads Flooded, Power Cuts Across the City
Bengaluru, May 18, 2025: On Thursday night, torrential rains pounded several areas of Bengaluru, causing significant disruptions in the Silicon Valley of India. The sudden downpour turned the cityscape into a water-logged maze, leaving thousands of residents struggling with traffic jams, power outages, and flooding.📍 Which Areas Were Worst Affected?
According to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), areas like Whitefield, Koramangala, Indiranagar, HSR Layout, Jayanagar, and Rajajinagar received the highest rainfall, with several zones recording 80 to 100 mm of rain within just a few hours.
🚗 Waterlogged Roads Trigger Massive Traffic Jams
Major arterial roads, including the Outer Ring Road, Silk Board Junction, and MG Road, were heavily waterlogged, leading to bumper-to-bumper traffic for hours. Several underpasses were completely submerged, making vehicular movement nearly impossible. Office-goers returning home had a particularly difficult time, with traffic moving at a crawl from 5 PM to 10 PM.
⚡ Power Outages & Internet Disruptions in Key Areas
The downpour also led to power outages in several neighborhoods due to water entering local transformers. Long stretches of power outage were experienced in places like BTM Layout, Marathahalli, and Yelahanka. Many residents reported that internet connectivity was also severely affected, disrupting both work-from-home professionals and students.
🏠 Homes Flooded in Low-Lying Areas
In low-lying zones such as Ejipura and Bellandur, water entered several houses, creating panic among residents. Videos shared on social media show living rooms and kitchens knee-deep in water. Citizens expressed frustration over BBMP’s lack of drainage infrastructure to deal with sudden downpours.
🧑💼 What is BBMP Doing?
In response to the situation, BBMP has activated 24x7 emergency helplines and deployed mobile water pumps and drain-cleaning teams across affected areas. The civic body has urged residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary and to report emergencies immediately.
📈 IMD Forecast: More Rain to Follow
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that Bengaluru is likely to witness more rainfall in the next 48 hours due to active monsoon conditions in the South Karnataka region. Residents have been urged to exercise caution and keep a careful eye on weather updates.
